We decided to take the trailer and family to Colorado for a week long vacation. I certainly wish it had been longer! It was beautiful there.
Our first stop was Great Sand Dunes National Park. We were there about 11 years ago but it was much hotter then and we could not really enjoy the dunes. It was much wetter and cooler this year. Had a great time and a great spot to camp. The boys enjoyed a game of catch with their dad.And continually tried to get sand out of their shoes. I think Zachary is still finding sand.We went on a guided hike to find edible plants in the park and had lots of good lessons. The boys even enjoyed it!The views are just awesome! This is Indian rice. I can tell you it would take forever to harvest enough to eat. The Indians made a flour out of it. Oh, that is not the rice on the end. You have to open those little pods. And a nice program in the amphitheater with the ranger entertaining us with his guitar even!Great sunsets.Buddy found a chipmunk hiding under the rock and he went crazy digging him out.He got half his body in the hole eventually,.Cool tracks in the sand. The stream this year was great. They said the snow melt was so big this year the stream was huge.We took a lid from a container up trying to make a sled but it just dug into the sand. Just not flat enough.Zane did try to roll down. That was not very good either. These girls made a mermaid from the wet sand. It was so cool. Those are little rocks in her tail fins. Great artistry!
Zapata Falls is very very close to the Great Sand Dunes and kind of a hidden treasure. I mean it is busy but it is a bit of a chore to get to so I think it could be more traveled if it was advertised a bit more. Lots of water there this year too. The first time we went you could get to the falls by just walking on rocks through the stream but this year we had to really get wet.
This is a pretty strenuous hike up rocks and they really need to let the elderly and those with little children know that. So fair warning!
The end until tomorrow! And more Colorado vacation.
