Colorado Vacation 2014–Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls

We decided to take the trailer and family to Colorado for a week long vacation.  I certainly wish it had been longer!  It was beautiful there.

Our first stop was Great Sand Dunes National Park.  We were there about 11 years ago but it was much hotter then and we could not really enjoy the dunes. It was much wetter and cooler this year. Had a great time and a great spot to camp.07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 0107-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 0507-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 0607-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 08The boys enjoyed a game of catch with their dad.07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 0907-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 10And continually tried to get sand out of their shoes.  I think Zachary is still finding sand.07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 1507-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 17We went on a guided hike to find edible plants in the park and had lots of good lessons.  07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 18The boys even enjoyed it!07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 1907-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 21The views are just awesome!07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 2307-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 25This is Indian rice.  I can tell you it would take forever to harvest enough to eat.  The Indians made a flour out of it.  Oh, that is not the rice on the end.  You have to open those little pods.07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 2607-05-14 Great Sand Dunes 29And a nice program in the amphitheater with the ranger entertaining us with his guitar even!07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes iphone01Great sunsets.07-05-14 Great Sand Dunes iphone0307-06-14 17-12-09 - 0007Buddy found a chipmunk hiding under the rock and he went crazy digging him out.07-06-14 17-12-45 - 000807-06-14 17-13-08 - 0009He got half his body in the hole eventually,.07-06-14 17-13-19 - 0012Cool tracks in the sand.07-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 01The stream this year was great.  They said the snow melt was so big this year the stream was huge.07-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 0507-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 0607-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 07We took a lid from a container up trying to make a sled but it just dug into the sand.  Just not flat enough.07-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 1307-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 1607-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 1807-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 2007-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 2107-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 2407-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 2707-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 3007-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 3107-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 3307-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 3707-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 3907-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 4007-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 43Zane did try to roll down.  That was not very good either.  07-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 5007-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 5207-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 54These girls made a mermaid from the wet sand.  It was so cool.  Those are little rocks in her tail fins.  Great artistry!07-06-14 Great Sand Dunes 56

Zapata Falls is very very close to the Great Sand Dunes and kind of a hidden treasure.  I mean it is busy but it is a bit of a chore to get to so I think it could be more traveled if it was advertised a bit more.  Lots of water there this year too.  The first time we went you could get to the falls by just walking on rocks through the stream but this year we had to really get wet.

This is a pretty strenuous hike up rocks and they really need to let the elderly and those with little children know that.  So fair warning!
