We were supposed to have a day of rest on the 6th. Ha! We can never have too much rest. Baltimore was pretty close so why not pay a visit to Ft. McHenry, birthplace of the Star Spangled Banner.
It was a beautiful day and a moving experience. Well worth the trip.
After a very good film about the fight to win our freedom from the British once again in the War of 1812, the movie backdrop opened and revealed this picture with us all standing and singing The Star Spangled Banner. Wow! It made chills go up our spines. This is the statue standing in front of the windows of Francis Scott Key.Many good displays.A view of the harbor from the fort. The fort is well preserved.
After Baltimore, and with half a day left, why not travel to the OTHER side of DC to the Smithsonian Museum of Aeronautics housed at Dulles Air Force Base. What a hoot getting too and from this museum. Lousy signs and lousy traffic. Oh well. Very well worth. Why they have two aeronautical museums, I don’t know!
Inside the museum is just fantastic, of course! This was the main reason for our trip out here. Ross was dying to see this plane. Have to admit, it was cool. And more motors…The space shuttle – HUGE!Some of those infamous tiles.Another HUGE plane the Concordia. Amazing the size and number of planes in here. The real Enola Gay that bombed Hiroshima.
Lots of historic artifacts here and yes, go see it!
