April 2 was a very very full day…

We saw monuments and buildings.  I will tell you about the buildings first then on to the monuments we saw on this day.

There is some lovely architecture in Washington.  And the buildings just fascinate me sometimes.

National Museum of American History

First, let me tell you that all of the Smithsonians are FREE.  Amazing.  And then every one of them has free wifi.  But who has time for wifi?  Too much to see.  You can never see it all in one building in one day.  And I can’t remember how many buildings there are but there are a bunch!04-02-14 022I know the picture does not do this justice but it was worn by Betty Davis and it was GORGEOUS!  That is all beading on the bodice.  Oh my.  For a black and white movie!Yes, I got quite bored with motors and light bulbs and such but the museum was a great look at our history.04-02-14 02404-02-14 02504-02-14 02604-02-14 02704-02-14 02804-02-14 02904-02-14 03004-02-14 03204-02-14 03404-02-14 03504-02-14 03604-02-14 03704-02-14 03804-02-14 039Dan, this boat is for you!  04-02-14 040This is Julia Child’s kitchen!  Whoa!  And it had a six burner stove!04-02-14 041Taking pictures gets interesting in the Smithsonian.  Lots of people jockeying for pictures or just getting in front of you.  Oh well.  04-02-14 04204-02-14 043I think this boat might leak.04-02-14 044

The Old Post Office

We would have never thought about the post office if a fellow traveler had not told us about it and going to the tower. It was a great side trip.  And apparently we may not get to see it much longer.  It is said that the building has been sold to Donald Trump and he plans on making it into a grand hotel.  I can see it as one.

And yes, there are bells there that do ring.  But thank goodness we were not up there when they rang.  Bet they would put the ears out at that distance.04-02-14 Old Post Office 0904-02-14 Old Post Office 1404-02-14 Old Post Office 15When was the last time you saw a 5 cent stamp?  And this one was a huge poster.04-02-14 Old Post Office 17

The White House

No, we did not score tickets to tour the White House.  Our congressman tried but they were just not to be had.  I think we asked far enough out but we heard they put a stop on visits for awhile.  Who knows.

However, as we were walking by the back of the White House we got a rare treat.  They were out setting up some stuff for the First Lady, Michelle, to start on the garden and prepare for the Easter Egg Roll on the grounds.  As we were watching, the Presidential dogs came out.  Sunny was on leash by an assistant and Bo was romping out into the yard.

04-02-14 White House 0104-02-14 White House 04Here comes Sunny.  You can tell by the no white paws.04-02-14 White House 05And there comes Bo.  He is a very happy go lucky dog I think.  He was having a ball and was not leashed. 04-02-14 White House 10Getting ready for the garden and egg roll, so we were told. I was surprised to see the beehive in the background. That is a beehive isn’t it?

Korean War Memorial

All of the monuments are moving.  This one was no exception.  I found it fascinating and you could almost feel the eyes of the men on you.

04-02-14 00504-02-14 00704-02-14 00804-02-14 009These are etchings of men’s faces.  Really cool!04-02-14 010

Viet Nam War Memorial

I have seen the replica of this in Amarillo and was very moved the first time I saw it.  It is still a moving experience.

This statue was added we heard because lots of Viet Nam Vets did not think the wall was enough.  Interesting. Oh, great statue but I was surprised the wall did not say enough.

04-02-14 Viet Nam Memorial 01The wall is huge.  04-02-14 Viet Nam Memorial 02We did not have any family, that we know of, killed in Viet Nam.  Of course we went to school with several who were.  This memorial is really overwhelming.04-02-14 Viet Nam Memorial 03This monument is the Viet Nam Nurses Memorial.  I really loved this one.04-02-14 Viet Nam Memorial 0404-02-14 Viet Nam Memorial 05

World War II Memorial

I think I read that this is one of the newest memorials.  They are still working on parts of it.

04-02-14 WWII Memorial 02Of course!04-02-14 WWII Memorial 0304-02-14 WWII Memorial 0404-02-14 WWII Memorial 0504-02-14 WWII Memorial 0604-02-14 WWII Memorial 0704-02-14 WWII Memorial 08

OK, I think that is it for April 2.  More for the 3rd later…
