Talk about an oasis in the desert – this is it. Whitewater Preserve is a little area outside Palm Springs just off I-10. I did not realize until I looked at the web site that it used to be a trout farm. No wonder they huge trout in the lake there.
We were first greeted with this little stream. This pond did not have any fish at all. Hmmmm.Well, I was not going to walk home from there!I think this is a gourd. There were lots of these along the highway.Whitewater. Not of the rolling kind to go rafting in.Some of us waded a bit. It was hard on the feet but cooling. The water picked up a white color I presume from the minerals. The area by the visitor and ranger station was so peaceful and beautiful. These trout were HUGE!! Probably 18-24 inches long and fat.See the baby ducklings? OK, just ducklings for you grammar nuts.I think we finally counted four. They came in and out of the brush then followed mama away from us.Can you see the squirrel? This was the strangest squirrel. Found out it was some sort of ground squirrel. Hairy yucca. So ended our travels. We went out to eat that night at a lovely Mexican restaurant. Good thing. Don’t think any of us could have cooked!
