Whitewater Preserve

Talk about an oasis in the desert – this is it.  Whitewater Preserve is a little area outside Palm Springs just off I-10.  I did not realize until I looked at the web site that it used to be a trout farm.  No wonder they huge trout in the lake there.

We were first greeted with this little stream.  04-24-12 3 White Water 0104-24-12 3 White Water 02This pond did not have any fish at all.  Hmmmm.04-24-12 3 White Water 04Well, I was not going to walk home from there!04-24-12 3 White Water 0504-24-12 3 White Water 06I think this is a gourd.  There were lots of these along the highway.04-24-12 3 White Water 1004-24-12 3 White Water 1204-24-12 3 White Water 15Whitewater.  Not of the rolling kind to go rafting in.04-24-12 3 White Water 17Some of us waded a bit.  It was hard on the feet but cooling.04-24-12 3 White Water 1904-24-12 3 White Water 21The water picked up a white color I presume from the minerals.04-24-12 3 White Water 2304-24-12 3 White Water 24The area by the visitor and ranger station was so peaceful and beautiful.04-24-12 3 White Water 27These trout were HUGE!!  Probably 18-24 inches long and fat.04-24-12 3 White Water 2804-24-12 3 White Water 2904-24-12 3 White Water 3004-24-12 3 White Water 3104-24-12 3 White Water 3304-24-12 3 White Water 3504-24-12 3 White Water 3604-24-12 3 White Water 3904-24-12 3 White Water 40See the baby ducklings?  OK, just ducklings for you grammar nuts.04-24-12 3 White Water 41I think we finally counted four.  They came in and out of the brush then followed mama away from us.04-24-12 3 White Water 4404-24-12 3 White Water 46Can you see the squirrel?  This was the strangest squirrel.  Found out it was some sort of ground squirrel.  04-24-12 3 White Water 51Hairy yucca.  04-24-12 3 White Water 55So ended our travels.  We went out to eat that night at a lovely Mexican restaurant.  Good thing.  Don’t think any of us could have cooked!
