Palo Duro Canyon mini trip

What an, ummmm, interesting trip.  We went down Friday afternoon after Zachary got out of school.  Totally not as organized as our vacation to New Mexico!  But we kind of got it together once there.   DSC06863 Mike and the boys went off on the bicycles while the rest of us relaxed and started dinner.  We cooked steaks out with potatoes grilled in foil and salad.  We did not get in bed until probably10, not too late.  However, we had neighbors that sat around their campfire and laughed and talked in loud voices.  I think they probably went to bed about 1 a.m.   It was not a big problem except when we turned off the air conditioner.  Yes, we used the a.c. because we had BUGS and more BUGS!  I know, we had screens but we also had HEAT!  There was no breeze through the camper.  Thank goodness for a.c.  Ross has decided any trailer we buy WILL have that!  How funny because he is the ultimate on not using an air conditioner.

Back to the stay.   We got up Saturday morning, fixed breakfast then Kathleen and I went to the showers.  We got ready and got the boys ready and off we all went to town for Zachary's football game and to lunch.  After lunch we took Mike, Ross and Zane to the house for them to nap and whatever.  Kathleen and I took Zachary to a birthday party then to pick up my camera.  (Yes, it was back from repair and like NEW!  Thank you, Sony, for above and beyond repairs!)  Picked up Zachary, picked up the rest of the guys and went back to the canyon.  DSC06868

Mike took the boys again on bicycles while Kathleen and I went for a hike.  The weather was just wonderful!  Perfect temperatures, slight breeze.  And of course there were mosquitoes and flies.  We saw a few deer and some turkeys.  DSC06864DSC06865

There is a replica of the Goodnight dugout in the canyon.  I looked in and decided I was glad there were bars on the door!  A bit eery and dark!  DSC06869

As we went down the trail the clouds started moving in and we decided to head back to camp and hope the boys were heading back too.  Then all of a sudden there they were on our path!  You could tell the little ones were having a great time!  Grins on those faces and Zachary had to tell us where they had been.  We all headed back up to camp.  I think we barely made it before the wind came up and we knew we were getting ready to get wet!  Bikes got stowed and we did get the fajita meat going on the grill but Mike ended up hiding under the end of the trailer to get the cooking finished.  Did we put the awning up?  No!  Next time we will for sure!

DSC06882DSC06880So me made it through the evening with RAIN, RAIN, RAIN!  The guys played poker and Kathleen and I just read and rested.  We got up Sunday to more rain and had to get the camper down.  By the time we got it done we were all soaked.  Zane and Zachary were having fun I think playing in the rain.  Zane love stomping the puddles.  Kathleen took the dogs from the trailer to the truck so they would not track water/mud in the truck.  Mike and Ross took the gray water tank to the dump in the truck as we put the final down on the trailer.

When they were there the worst happened.  The dogs put their paws on the door lock and locked them out of the truck, with the motor running!  We got one of the park workers to give us a ride to the trading post and I called information, got Onstar's number, called them and we were unlocked in 2 seconds!!!  OK, this is a plug for Onstar!  We have it free right now but I think I may just pay for that service after the trial date.  It was wonderful!!!!  We made it home, wet and cold, but safely!  I was so glad to get in the nice hot shower.  We still need to open the trailer again and get it really cleaned up.  Despite all the problems, we had a great time and the canyon was nice and green.  And we are already thinking about a much calmer weekend trip sometime down there again.

I think I have rambled enough.  Back to life.  Have to go pick up Zane and Ross's car from some repairs.
